Ethanahami also known as Ranethana/ Queen Ranmanika. She is the Queen and only consort of King Dutugamumu of Sri Lanka. Ethanahami is a daughter of a village head in Kothmale. She comes from humble beginnings and she is acquainted with the young prince Gamini when he takes refuge at home when the young prince was hiding from his father.
The young prince, according to the Mahawamsa had an argument he had with his father over invading Raja rata to defeat King Elara. When his father refuses to oblige to his request he sends his father women's clothing as an insult. His mother, Queen Viharamahadevi foreseeing the disruption to follow assists the young prince to flee. Prince Gamunu lives as a simple farmer in the village of Pundalu Oya in Kothmale for several years. It is during this time does he fall in love with the beautiful Ethanahami.
Ethanahami was the eldest of two daughters. She was known as a genteel woman of grace and virtue and beauty. She well in love with a prince and she marries him but is unaware that her husband is the future prince of Lanka. Together they lived a very happy life as simpletons and Ethanahami begat a son. However, when the time was ripe for the young prince to take up the throne and lead the country to unification. Prince Dutugamumu who never revealed his true identity to his wife, deserted both his wife and son to fulfill his duty to unify the country. Ethanahami becomes the laughing stock of her people and she is looked down on and frown upon as her husband has abandoned her without any reasoning.
As years go by Ethanahami single-handedly raises their son Saliya and not falling to the cruel insults of society. It takes King Dutugamumu several years to finally unify Lanka. After which he comes back in search of his beautiful and strong wife Ethanahami. He asks his wife for the deception and explains the truth and takes her back as his chief Queen consort and names her Queen Ramanika! Even though it is King Dutugamumu who is celebrated as a legendary hero of Lanka history people often forget that his reign as a mighty king was the fruitful cause of the undying loyalty and support he received from his Ethanahami!
